A homage to homology: patterns of copepod evolution OMA
Boxshall, G.; Huys, R..
Lack of attention to determining the homology of character states is recognized as being responsible for the ever increasing numbers of phylogenetic schemes for the Crustacea that appear and disappear so rapidly. Detailed study of musculature. segmentation and setation of the limbs of all 10 orders of copepods revealed numerous phylogenetically informative characters. based on segmental fusion patterns and the presence of individually identified setation elements. Simple counts of limb segments (or of setae) were found to be virtually useless for constructing phylogenies in the copepods. This conclusion can probably be extended to other crustacean groups.

A model for eel growth in aquaculture OMA
Houvenaghel, T.; Huet, T..
Growth in eel populations is not centered around the mean. The model described here is designed to take the growth rate variability into account by classifying the population, step by step in time, into size boxes on which grading and grouping occurs. By selecting options, this model allows the fit to other growth conditions and therefore can be adapted to other species. This growth model is the backbone of a predictive model for aquaculture, built up by adding allometric functions related to basic physiological properties.

A model of early diagenetic processes from the shelf to abyssal depths OMA
Soetaert, K.; Herman, P.M.J.; Middelburg, J.J..
We present a numerical model of sedimentary early diagenetic processes that includes oxic and anoxic mineralization. The model belongs to the new wave of early diagenesis models that account for depth-dependent bioturbation and porosity profiles; it can be used both for calculating steady-state conditions and transient simulation. It was developed to reproduce the cycling of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen along the ocean margin; it resolves the sediment-depth profiles of carbon, oxygen, nitrate, ammonium, and other reduced substances. Organic carbon is modeled as two degradable fractions with different first-order degradation rates and nitrogen:carbon ratios, to account for the decreasing reactivity and N/C ratio of the organic matter with depth into the...

A model of nematode dynamics in the Westerschelde Estuary OMA
Li, J.; Vincx, M.; Herman, P.M.J..
We developed a time dynamic model to investigate the temporal dynamics of nematode community in the brackish zone of the Westerschelde Estuary. The biomass of four nematode feeding groups observed from March 1991 to February 1992 is used to calibrate the model. Using environmental data as the input, the model predicts the temporal modification and interrelation of four nematode feeding groups. Nematodes achieve a dominant position in the community because of their lower loss rate (in respiration, excretion and natural death). Predators which are deposit-feeding macrobenthos control the variations of dominant nematodes, such as omnivores and non-selective deposit feeders. Food availability causes modification only for rare nematodes such as epigrowth...

A new artificial diet for the early weaning of seabass (<i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i>) larvae OMA
Devresse, B.; Candreva, P.; Léger, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The weaning of marine fish larvae is a critical step in larval rearing. The successful transition from live food to an artificial feed depends among others on the quality of the dry feed used (e.g. freshness of ingredients, digestibility, quality of the formulation) and the larvae themselves (e.g. age, behaviour towards artificial diets, development of the digestive tract, efficiency of certain metabolic pathways). The present study shows the results obtained with a new artificial diet formulated for the weaning phase of marine fish larvae (<i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i>) in commercial hatcheries.

A new deep sea coralline sponge from Turks and Caicos Islands: <i>Willardia caicosensis</i> gen. <i>et</i> sp. nov. (Demospongiae: Hadromerida) OMA
Willenz, P.; Pomponi, S.A..
A new coralline sponge, <i>Willardia caicosensis</i>, assigned to the family Timeidae, is described from the deep fore reef off the Turks & Caicos Islands, tropical western Atlantic Ocean, where it is common at depths ranging from 100 to 119 m. Individuals vary up to 15-20 cm in width. The relatively thin aragonitic skeleton is covered with delicate pillars up to + 1 mm. The living tissue is restricted to the spaces between pillars and a thin sheet lying above the calcareous skeleton. Exhalant canals converge upon regularly spaced central oscules on the sponge surface. Siliceous spicules include tylostyles and amphiasters which are secondarily embedded in the aragonitic moiety of the skeleton. In addition, ultrastructural characters of...

A new genus and species of Tantulocarida (Crustacea: Tantulocarida) parasitic on a harpacticoid copepod from the Skagerrak OMA
Huys, R.; Boxshall, G..
The new genus and species. Boreotuntulus kunzi, is described from Cylindropsyllus laevis, caught off the isle of Bonden, Bohaslän, Skagerrak. It is placed in the Deoterthridae on the basis of its larval characters. It can be distinguished form other genera by the presence of a distinct praecoxal segment carrying the endite on larval thoracopods2 to 5. This is the second tantulocaridan to be recorded in Scandinavian waters.

A new genus of the family Pontocyprididae (Crustacea, Ostracoda) from the Indian and Pacific Oceans, with the description of two new species OMA
Wouters, K..
A new pontocypridid genus, <i>Peripontocypris</i> gen. nov. and two new species are described from the Maldive Islands, Papua New Guinea and from Easter Island. The new genus has a remarkable set of characters, which are unknown in other members of the family: six adductor muscle scars, a Y-shaped Zenker's organ and a large furca. Some other characters of the valves and the soft parts are reminiscent of different pontocypridid genera, and suggest a mosaic type of evolution. The affinities of <i>Peripontocypris</i> with other genera, and its taxonomic position are discussed.

A new harpacticoid copepod family collected from Australian sponges and the status of the subfamily Rhynchothalestrinae Lang OMA
Huys, R..
A new family is proposed for <i>Hamondia superba</i> gen. et sp. nov., a shield-shaped harpacticoid collected from washings of sponges from Port Phillip, Australia. It is concluded that the closest relatives of the Hamondiidae fam. nov. currently belong to the heterogeneous thalestrid genus <i>Rhynchothalestris</i> Sars, 1905 and for that reason the latter is revised. <i>Rhynchothalestris rufocincta</i> (Brady, 1880) is redescribed and designated as type species for Ambunguipes gen. nov., comprising also the Indo-Pacific <i>A. Similis</i> (A. Scott, 1909) which is re-instated. <i>Ambunguipes vanhoeffeni</i> (Brady, 1910) is ranked as species inquirenda within the genus. Because of its body...

A new species of <i>Microdajus</i> (Crustacea: Tantulocarida) parasitic on a tanaid in the north-eastern Atlantic, with observations on <i>M. langi</i> Greve OMA
Boxshall, G.; Huys, R.; Lincoln, R..
The tantulus larva ofMicrodajus langi is redescribed using Scanning Electron Microscopy. Thoracopods 2–5 have poorly developed but fully armed endites. Thoracopods 1–5 are biramous, with each ramus represented by a minute segment. A new species,M. pectinatus, is described from a tanaid host collected in the Rockall Trough, off the west coast of Scotland. A system of homologies for the portopodal segments of the thoracopods of the tantulus larva is proposed. Some aspects of the musculature of the adult male are described for the first time.

A new species of <i>Parthenope</i> Weber (Crustacea: Brachyura: Parthenopidae) from the Pacifc coast of Mexico OMA
Hendrickx, M.E.; Landa-Jaime, V..
A new species of Parthenopidae from the East Pacific belonging to the genus <i>Parthenope</i> Weber is described and illustrated. <i>Parthenope johngarthi</i> n. sp. was collected along the west coast of Mexico, off the coast of Jalisco and Colima. <i>Parthenope johngarthi</i> is readily distinguished from species of other genera of Parthenopidae from the East Pacific by the shape of the tuberculate carapace, the relative lenght and shape of the chelipeds, and the shape and relative size of segments of walking legs. It is closely related to <i>P. exilipes</i> (Rathbun, 1893) but differs from the latter by its slender and almost smooth walking legs, its slender and less densely tuberculate chelipeds, and by...

A new species of the genus <i>Pontocypria</i> (Crustacea, Ostracoda), commensal of a lamellariid gastropod OMA
Wouters, K..
<i>Pontocypria coriocellae</i> sp. n. is described from Papua New Guinea. The species was found inside the oral tube near the radula, of <i>Coriocella nigra</i> Blainville, 1824 (Gastropoda, Prosobranchia, Lamellariidae). Because of its morphology and its mode of life, the new species may be considered as an occasional commensal of its gastropod hosts. It is the first <i>Pontocypria</i> species to be found inside its host. The distribution of the genus <i>Pontocypria</i> is discussed.

A new test system for the evaluation of toxic levels of liposoluble products in the aquatic food chain using <i>Artemia</i> and <i>Mysidopsis bahia</i> as experimental animals OMA
Van Sprang, P.; Léger, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
A new test system is described for the evaluation of toxic levels of liposoluble products in the aquatic food chain using <i>Artemia</i> and <i>Mysidopsis bahia</i> (M.) as experimental animals. For this, freshly released juveniles (<24h old) of <i>M. bahia</i> are transferred to the experimental bioassay test system, cultured under standard conditions and fed 24h old purposely contaminated <i>Artemia</i> nauplii. After 11 days, data on survival, reproductive characteristics, individual length and dry weight are recorded and treated statistically.

A note on <i>Rhipilia nigrescens</i> Coppejans & Prud'homme van Reine (Chlorophyta) OMA
Coppejans, E.; Prud'homme van Reine, W.F..
In our paper on seaweeds of the Snellius-II expedition (Coppejans & Prud'homme van Reine, 1989) we suggested that the new species <i>Rhipilia nigrescens</i> had been described in Phycologia. Due to regulations of that journal and corroborated by the short spell between acceptance and publication in Blumea, the Latin description can no longer be expected to be published as suggested. To validate the name of the new species a Latin description of the holotype is published here.
